Healthcare professionals team up with artists to produce comic sequel for World Diabetes Day.

A new comic book will provide a fun way for young people with type 1 diabetes to learn more about the condition and understand the importance of good self-management.

Type 1: Attack of the Ketones (Vol.2) takes inspiration from Marvel superhero comics and was published to coincide with World Diabetes Day on 14th November.

The comic is a sequel to the award-winning Type 1: Origins and the story was developed in collaboration with people with type 1 diabetes and leading diabetes healthcare professionals.

Dr Partha Kar, of Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, and Associate National Clinical Director for Diabetes for NHS England and Dr Mayank Patel, of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, DRWF Editorial Advisory Board member, worked with the Revolve Comics publishing company to make the cartoon.

Dr Patel said: “For the new comic, Type 1: Attack of the Ketones, a story has been developed around the importance of being ketone aware in type 1 diabetes. Again, the hope is that use of this medium as an informative, entertaining and educational piece will provide another means of engaging younger people with type 1 diabetes and in particular, remembering their ‘sick day rules.’”

Despite accounting for around only 10% of the total number of people with the condition, type 1 diabetes is often confused with type 2, which is often linked to obesity and more common in older people.

Since its release in 2016 the first Type 1 comic has been downloaded 9,500 times worldwide and was awarded the Diabetes Collaboration Initiative of the Year title at last year’s Quality in Care Diabetes awards.

Copies of the comic have also been distributed at insulin pump transition clinics and presented to young people who are newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
