A sleepover for a group of stargazing youngsters with type 1 diabetes was held at the London Planetarium recently, as part of the launch of a new device to monitor blood sugar levels.

The FreeStyle Libre flash glucose monitoring system was recently made available in the UK, and could mean an end to the days of routine blood glucose (sugar) testing with lancets, test strips and blood for youngsters with type 1 diabetes, aged four to 17.

Around 26 children with type 1 diabetes and their parents were invited for an evening of fun organised by Abbott Diabetes Care, who make the device.

During the evening youngsters enjoyed talks by consultant Dr Tabitha Randell, who specialises in paediatric diabetes and were kept busy with children’s entertainers Sharkey and George and completed scientific experiments.

The Freestyle Libre means parents can scan their child through their pyjamas, during the night without having to wake them up and prick their fingers.

Previously night time testing and hypos (blood glucose levels falling too low) were reported as a major concern for parents, and scanning their child is easier than pricking their fingers.

The newly available device was designed to change how people with diabetes measure their glucose levels and ultimately help them achieve better results in their self-management of the condition.

The system reads glucose levels through a sensor that can be worn on the back of the upper arm for up to 14 days, eliminating the need for routine finger pricks. In addition, no finger prick calibration is needed — unlike other currently available continuous glucose monitoring systems.

The event highlighted a new device that makes night time blood testing easier by scanning instead of pricking fingers
