Pauline Mathers was a great supporter of the charity.

DRWF staff and colleagues were very sad to learn of the recent death of Pauline Mathers who was a tireless supporter of the charity.

Over the last 10 years Pauline became involved with DRWF as a volunteer at many of our Diabetes Wellness Day educational events and raising awareness of the work of the charity.

Pauline ran the Hull And District Diabetes Support Group together with Lionel Curtis – and the pair were regularly out in the community attending events with information tables raising awareness about diabetes and handing out the DRWF newsletter and leaflets and other resources.

Pauline and Lionel were very active locally liaising with GPs, practice nurses and the regional diabetes teams and tried very hard to get DRWF recognised by them and even get some educational/awareness days off the ground. Their hard work was recognised as they won a local award for their community outreach work.

Lee Calladine, DRWF Events Co-ordinator, said: “Pauline and Lionel both became very dedicated, reliable, and valued volunteers and friends over the years and travelled all over the country to support the Diabetes Wellness Days here in the South, the Midlands and almost all of the North ones.

“Pauline was such a lovely, personable lady with a great sense of humour and a mischievous twinkle in her eye. The delegates all loved her, and she was great at selling DRWF Christmas cards for us and encouraging people to buy raffle tickets and donate to us at the events.

“Like our other volunteers that have recently passed, it will never be the same without Pauline and we will greatly miss her presence and help at the wellness days. I know Hayley Hakansson, DRWF Volunteer and Ambassador, of the Hartlepool Diabetes Support Group and the delegates at the Diabetes Wellness Day North in Hartlepool will miss her too, as they are very fond of her. Pauline and Lionel felt and feel very much a part of the DRWF family.”

In addition to attending DRWF Diabetes Wellness Day events as a volunteer, Pauline helped raise funds for DRWF, donated prizes for raffles and manned many stands raising awareness about diabetes and signposting people to DRWF at every opportunity, plus much more.

Pauline will be much missed this year at the upcoming DRWF Diabetes Wellness Days that make a return following a two-year break during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lionel will still be carrying on their amazing work and we are looking forward to seeing him at the Diabetes Wellness Day South when he joins us as part of the DRWF team next week.
