DRWF supporters in Hartlepool celebrate World Diabetes Day.

DRWF held an educational Wellness Morning recently in Hartlepool to celebrate World Diabetes Day and mark the 25th anniversary of the charity.

The event was the first of its kind, following on from the successful Diabetes Wellness Day North events previously held in the County Durham town.

The Wellness Morning was held on 11th November in the week of World Diabetes Day (14th November) at the National Museum of the Royal Navy and attended by more than 30 people interested to learn more about living with diabetes.

The aim of the morning was to support people living with diabetes, their family and carers, to improve their management and understanding of the condition – plus an opportunity to meet healthcare professionals and other people living with diabetes.

The event was organised with the support of the Hartlepool Diabetes Support Group and our colleagues at the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and run by DRWF volunteer Hayley Hakansson.

As the event coincided with Remembrance Day, a minute’s silence was observed by attendees at 11am.

A raffle raised £90 and attendees enjoyed lunch together after a busy morning featuring presentations on diabetes devices and a question and answer session from guest Diabetes Specialist Nurses Julie Sinclair and Patricia Lowther.

Hayley said: “Everyone attending the event said how lovely the Wellness Morning was and they felt they had learned something, in addition to refreshing their memories about helpful tips for living with diabetes.”

Lee Calladine, DRWF Event Coordinator, said: “Hayley is an amazing volunteer and feels very much like a member of the DRWF team. Hayley is a huge advocate for us in Hartlepool and wider area and regularly takes our resources into the diabetes centre, gives DRWF packs to new members of the support group and refers people to us all the time.”

In the build-up to the event Hayley promoted the Wellness Morning with an appearance on the Radio Hartlepool breakfast show, talking to presenter Jason Anderson.

As DRWF this year celebrates its 25th anniversary, we combined our usual programme of Diabetes Wellness Days into a landmark event, the Big Diabetes Wellness Day, entitled United Through Diabetes. This unique educational event invited all DRWF supporters and the wider diabetes community to join us for this special occasion, as we recognised a quarter century of commitment to diabetes awareness, education and research.
